We're committed to growing nutrient-dense foods that support good overall health. Mushrooms and microgreens provide high nutritional value in small packages (sometimes not-so-small packages too).
Mushrooms have been widely used for dietary and medicinal purposes dating back to some of the earliest known cultures. Studies on the health benefits of mushrooms have shown that these fruitful fungi can be a good source of various B vitamins, vitamin D, copper, and selenium in addition to supporting good gut health!
Microgreens are like little nutrient powerhouses. These tiny, tender greens are known to provide higher levels of nutrients than their mature counterparts. All the nutrients needed to grow a full-sized plant are still contained inside when harvested at this growth stage, making them extra nutritious (and delicious to boot)!
Johnny Ewing has always had a passion for good food. His background has been in the restaurant industry cooking up tasty dishes for over two decades. He would always come up with new recipes to share with his co-workers. Over the course of his journey he discovered that what really kept him going is food that makes others happy. When restaurants began shutting down in 2020, he shifted his focus to the study of mycology.
After spending years perfecting his skills in the kitchen, he has been perfecting his farming expertise. He's spending hours in the mushroom lab to find strains that produce amazing flavor profiles. He is always learning something new by experimenting with various microgreen varieties. He has been combining his love and knowledge of good food with a new-found passion for growing healthy, delicious produce for local communities.
Lindsay Ewing comes from a background of customer service, business behind-the-scenes, and financial support. She has been on a journey of learning to grow food with a permaculture focus for the last 12 years. It has been a learning experience for health of self, family, community, and land. She is driven by sharing the bounty of the gardens and discovering the potential of small, urban farms for a sustainable future.
She is dedicated to creating art that serves humanity and nature through no-till gardens and forest gardens. Connecting with people is a beautiful thing. With the rapid growth of technological platforms, connecting as humans becomes increasingly important, so we don't lose touch.
We've just finished our second market season and are looking forward to starting our third! We had the fortunate opportunity to participate in the following markets last season: The Original Independence Farmers' Market, Albany Farmer's Market, and Corvallis Wednesday Market. We're participating in the Salem Winter Market at the 45th Parallel building through the winter months.
Here at Sunreach we are focused on regenerative growing practices and permaculture principles. Each growing area on the farm is created with purpose: grow soil; feed plants; provide habitat for wildlife; and supply foraging and fun for the farm animals. It's a bonus that we get to share our harvest with friends, family, and community!
The land is important to us, so every aspect of our farm plays an important role in growing. Our goats mow grass, maintain blackberry bushes, and provide compost materials for the gardens. The ducks enjoy digging around gardens in winter for slugs and insects, while Tommy Goose keeps a close eye out for predators. The chickens dig through compost piles and winter gardens as well. Once spring planting starts, they're restricted from gardens and left in charge of keeping the grass maintained.
All the biproducts from our our indoor production are put back into the farm. Mushroom blocks are added back to garden beds and compost piles. The mycelium in the blocks help create a healthy soil structure, speed up decomposition of woody materials, and help support delivery of nutrients to plants. After microgreens are harvested, the mats of remaining soil, microgreen stems and roots are used as sheet mulch in gardens or fed to our ducks and laying hens providing nutrients for our flocks and our soil. Leftover microgreens and mushrooms are fed to our worms, creating some of the best garden food on the farm!
The food we consume fuels our lives! We take it to the next level by being considerate of how we fuel our food.
